According to Eke, it was as a result of his current job role as a Consultant to the World Bank which was conflicting with the appointment.
A nominee for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Board, Urum Kalu Eke, has rejected the appointment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The nominee’s rejection of the appointment was revealed following the presentation of a report by the Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions presented by its Chairman, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East), during Thursday’s plenary.
OrderPaper recalls that President Tinubu had on the 14th of February, 2024, requested the Senate to screen and confirm five persons appointed as Directors of the Board of the CBN in compliance with the provision of section 6(1a) and section 10(1)(2) of the CBN Act, 2007.
They are; Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Murtala Sagaley, Urum Eke, and Olayinka Aliyu.

Presenting the report, Senator Abiru mentioned that the Committee had conducted a thorough investigation of the nominees.
He however disclosed that one of the nominees, Urum Kalu Eke was absent for the screening and for that reason, the committee did not clear him for appointment.
Reacting, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North) informed the Senate that Urum, whom he identified as a member of his constituency, reached out to him to inform him of his absence from the screening. According to him, it was a result of his current job role as a Consultant to the World Bank which was conflicting with the appointment.
Kalu disclosed that Urum said it was for that reason that “he would be declining the appointment.”
The Senate which was presided over by the Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, thereafter resolved into the committee of the Whole to consider the report.
Following the consideration of the report, the Senate confirmed four (4) nominees – Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Murtala Sagaley, and Olayinka Aliyu as they were approved as members of CBN Board of Directors.
