The House of Representatives committee said it would avail WAEC another chance to appear before it on Thursday, December 21, 2023 owing to the board’s absence at session billed for today
The House of Representatives committee on basic education has summoned the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the absence of its officials at the 2024 budget defence hearing.
The committee ordered the examination board to appear before it on Thursday, December 21, 2023 by 2pm or face possible sanctions
Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Oboku Oforji (PDP, Bayelsa), disclosed this decision at the botched budget hearing on Tuesday, 19 December, 2023.
According to him, the committee will be unable to review the board’s budget without the presence of its officials, as this would hamper the quality of assessment that would be carried out.
Rep. Oforji noted that the committee will be forced to sanction the examination regulatory body should it fail to appear before it as demanded on Thursday.
“WAEC in reference to our evaluation of the budget performance and details of the proposed budget is supposed to be here today. Unfortunately, WAEC is not here. As a responsible committee, we cannot shave a man’s head in his absence. And for this, the committee has resolved to reschedule for Thursday, December, 2023. Failure to attend, the House committee will have no option but to take necessary actions.”
