2025 Budget Defence: Reps Committee on Army holds session behind closed doors

The House of Representatives committee on army has expressed satisfaction with the level of implementation of the 2024 budget.

Chairman of the committee, Rep. Aminu Balele (APC Katsina), made this known on Monday while addressing journalists after a closed-door session with the officers of the Nigerian Army to review their 2025 budget proposal.

Rep. Balele emphasised the need to enhance the army’s capital expenditure, overhead costs, and other allowances to align with global best practices. He had earlier announced the move to an executive session after delivering his opening remarks.

The Nigerian Army, which was initially invited to present a summary of its budget defence, was interrupted by a point of order raised by Rep. Kama Nkemkanma (LP Ebonyi), who moved for the proceedings to be held privately.

Speaking in support of the Nigerian Army, Rep. Balele expressed the committee’s unwavering dedication to the welfare and capacity of the armed forces.

Let me emphasise, our committee’s responsibility is a far-reaching one. We are, in essence, the front-line defenders of our military interests within the homes of government,” he stated.

He continued: “Our commitment to this cause is not just professional, it is deeply personal and prosthetic. We often joke among ourselves that we are more military than military.

Our dedication to the welfare and capability of our armed forces is not measured by uniforms we wear, but by the unwavering resolve in our hearts and minds.

As your representatives, we stand ready to aggressively champion your needs, fight for your resources, and defend your interests, with a fervor that rivals any question of commitment,” Rep. Balele remarked.
