The House of Reps has reiterated its dedication to ensuring that the Nigerian Armed Forces is provided with the support it requires.

The House of Representatives has vowed to continuously support the Nigerian armed forces by swiftly approving the required supplementary and substantive appropriations it requires.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chairman, House Committee on Media & Public Affairs, Akin Alabi (APC, Oyo) on Monday, January 15, 2024, in commemoration of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The Green Chamber pledged to assist the Armed Forces through the provision of modern equipment, ramping up training, and improving the welfare packages for security personnel.

The House described the Armed Forces as one of the best in the world, highlighting the commitment and sacrifices made by its personnel to keep the peace and unity of the country.

It applauded Nigeria’s armed forces for their continued dedication to protecting the country from threats and expressed gratitude to personnel who died in service indicating the importance of compensating families of the personnel who lost their lives in service.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an occasion that is held yearly, on the 15th of January, to honour the Nigerian military personnel who died in the line of duty.

The House recalled that President, Bola Tinubu recently cleared the backlogs, salaries, and allowances due to them.

“The commitment and dedication of these gallant men and women to peace and unity in our country and beyond over the years are well documented.  It is noteworthy that members of the Armed Forces are also involved in internal security operations across land, air, and water against terrorists, insurgents, economic saboteurs, and other criminal elements in various states of the federation.

Therefore, as we commemorate this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, we salute their strength, patriotic service, and sacrifices in defending our sovereignty. We consider these contributions as unforgettable and invaluable services that will continue to inspire gratitude by generations unborn.

The Green Chamber also pays tribute to the heroes and heroines who lost their lives or parts of their bodies for the rest of us to go about our lives without fear. We all remember these indelible sacrifices, just as our solidarity and prayers of comfort go to their families and loved ones. You are eternally appreciated.

“In line with Agenda 2: Improving National Security of our Legislative Agenda, we reiterate our resolve to further put proactive and innovative legislation, robust engagements, and effective oversight in place. This will enhance public trust in our security institutions and help in the achievement of their mandate,” the statement read.

The Senate President, GoodWill Akpabio (APC, Akwa-Ibom south) had earlier urged Nigerians to push for the growth of the country in unity, regardless of their political, ethnic, or religious beliefs.

He also said, “The unity of Nigeria came at a great price. The sustenance and defence of this unity rests on the shoulders of the men and women of the Armed Forces, and the true weight of loss is carried by the families and dependents of these fallen heroes. If only we could share the pain they feel, then we would truly understand the imperative of eschewing insecurity and violence in all its forms.”
