Security bills represents 7.2 percent of the 1175 House bills processed in the first year of the 10th House.
While security is a fundamental aspect of societal stability and individual well-being, it remains a pressing issue in Nigeria, encompassing personal safety, national defense, and cybersecurity. The security sector faces significant challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and intercommunal violence, which have hindered the ability of responsible agencies to protect lives and property effectively.
In the first year of the 10th House of Representatives, 85 bills specifically targeting the security sector were introduced, aiming to bolster the nation’s security framework. These proposals emphasize sustainable practices across various sectors, including the armed forces, paramilitary, cyber security, maritime security, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the peace corps among others.
They seek to strengthen regulatory frameworks to combat insecurity and enhance the welfare of security operatives while proposing a paramlitary trust fund, cybercrimes prevention, establishment of a police academy, and a maritime academy.
How do these bills address the security challenge?
These proposals include amendments to existing laws governing national security agencies, which aim to improve operational efficiency and inter-agency collaboration. Additionally, proposals on arms control seek to combat the proliferation of small arms that fuel insecurity across several regions.

There has also been emphasis on community involvement in security matters which is a notable move as these proposed initiatives will encourage local participation in safety planning and intelligence gathering. By fostering partnerships between government agencies and local communities, these measures aim to create a more holistic approach to security that addresses underlying social issues.
Given the alarming rise in violence and crime, these legislative efforts are crucial for addressing Nigeria’s multifaceted security challenges. To be effective, however, it is vital that these bills are not only proposed but also implemented with a focus on community involvement and inter-agency collaboration.
