Zamfara lawmakers sponsored 47 bills representing a mere 2.84 percent of the total number in both the Senate and House of Representatives in one year.

Out of a total number of 1,650 bills sponsored in the 10th National Assembly in one year, 10 lawmakers from Zamfara state account for 47 bills. A majority of these bills have witnessed very slow progression with many of them staying just on the first reading stage.

According to OrderPaper’s detailed analysis of bills processed between June 2023 and May 2024, the senate introduced a total of 475 bills out of which Zamfara senators sponsored seven (7 ). In same manner, the House of Representatives recorded 1175 bills in total with Zamfara Reps sponsoring 40 bills in total.

Zamfara state’s representation in the 10th NASS includes three senators and seven representatives in the house, some of whom are newbies. Despite their political and social experiences on issues, it may seem as though they are uninterested in the business of law-making which is their primary responsibility. The performance from the Zamfara lawmakers in the Senate represents a mere 1.47% and in the House of Representatives it is 3.40%.

Former governor of Zamfara state, Abdulaziz Yari scored nil in the bills chart;  Sahabi Ya’u who is serving a 4th term sponsored 6 bills; and Aliyu Ikra representing Zamfara central sponsored 1 bill only.

In the House of Representatives, Rep. Abdulmalik Zubairu representing Bungudu/Maru federal constituency topped the bills chart with 19 bills, followed closely by Abubakar Gummi representing Gummi/Bukkuyum consistency with 14 bills at various stages.

Also Rep. Amadu Kabiru representing Gusau/Tsafe constituency has 3 bills and Ahmed Muhammad representing Bakura/Maradun recorded 1 bill respectively.

These representatives failed to sponsor any bill: Mohammed Anka, representing Anka/Talata Mafara, Aminu Kano representing Kaura-Namoda/Birnin-Magaji and Hassan Shinkafi representing Shinkafi/Zurmi.

Since its inception, OrderPaper Nigeria has championed multifaceted media products and advocacy programmes geared towards legislative accountability. One of such is the innovative, trail-blazing and unimpeachable annual performance appraisals of members of the national assembly.
