12 Ondo lawmakers sponsored 24 bills but three newbies from the state scored zero on the first year report card of the 10th national assembly
Aside from oversight and representation, the core function of the legislature is lawmaking for the good governance and well-being of citizens.
Members of the 10th Senate and House of Representatives processed a total number of 1,650 bills in the first year of the parliament. Of this number, lawmakers representing Ondo state account for 24 bills, representing 1.45 percent of the total tally from both chambers. However, 90 percent of these 24 bills are yet to scale through second reading while 10 percent are awaiting commitee consideration.
According to OrderPaper’s detailed analysis of bills sponsored between June 2023 and May 2024, the three senators representing the state account for 9 of the 475 bills sponsored in the Senate. The nine representatives from the state account for 15 of the 1175 bills recorded in the green chamber.
Sen. Jimoh Ibrahim representing Ondo south sponsored five (5) bills, while Sen. Jide Ipinsagba representing Ondo north and Sen. Adeniyi Adegonmire representing Ondo central sponsored two (2) bills each. The trio are first term senators.
Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, Rep. Makinde Abiola representing Ondo east/Ondo west and serving a second term, recorded five (5) bills putting him ahead of his colleagues from the state in the House. Rep. Odimayo John representing Okitipupa/Irere accounted for four (4), Rep. Adesina Aderin recorded three (3) and Rep. Akingbaso Olarewaju representing Idanre/Ifedore also sponsored bills.
Other lawmakers are: Reps. Adelegbe Oluwatimehin, (a newbie) representing Owo/Ose and Adefiranye Festus (2nd term) accounted for 1 bill each.
These three members from the state: Reps. Ojogo Kimikanboh representing Ilaje/Ese-Odo, Ehindaro Ifeoluwa Babajide representing Akoko North east/west, and Adegboyega Adefarati representing Akoko south-west/east who are all newbies failed to sponsor a bill in the period under review.
