Gusau’s impeachment came barely three hours after the House received the report of the investigative panel constituted by the State’s Chief Judge, Kulu Aliyu.

Some of the allegations against him were a breach of the Constitution, gross misconduct, financial fraud, and abuse of office.

The deputy governor became victim of a political chess game after he declined to join Governor Bello Matatwalle in defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Matawalle and Mahdi Gusau were both declared elected in 2019 by the Supreme Court following the apex court’s disqualification of APC candidates who had earlier won the polls.

The new Deputy Governor had on 29 June 2021, tendered his resignation as a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Senate. He explained in the letter that his decision was necessitated by the collapse of internal democracy and factionalisation of the party in Zamfara State from the ward level.
