OrderPaperToday – The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Idris Wase, has assured Nigerians that the 9th Assembly is working tirelessly to deliver on constitutional reforms that will provide for an autonomous local government system that will be the true third tier of government before the expiration of their legislative tenure.
The Deputy Speaker of the House who doubles as Chairman, Special Ad-hoc Committee on Constitutional Amendment, was speaking at a two-day leadership and development master class training program for the elected local government chairmen and councillors of Delta State in Abuja on Thursday organised by the Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu.
Mr. Wase lent his overwhelming support to fiscal and total autonomy for the third tier of government across the country and expressed confidence in the capacity of the tier in addressing the varied socio-economic, political and security challenges bedeviling the country.
He also applauded the initiative of the President Buhari in signing the Presidential Order 10 which gives fiscal autonomy to state legislature and judiciary.
On his part the convener of the two day training, Mr. Elumelu encouraged state governments to embrace local government autonomy and invest in human capital development for effective public service delivery.
The minority leader noted that “it’s now left for other states to know that there is a need for them to emulate what Delta has done by supporting it. So if Delta State can support it I don’t see any other state that shouldn’t support local government autonomy.”
