OrderPaperToday – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has been mandated by his colleagues to lead a high-powered delegation to Plateau in order to condole with the people and government over the recent loss of lives and properties resulting from crises that engulfed the state.

The House also mandated the ministry of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development; the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies of government to urgently provide relief materials to the victims of the attacks, in order to assuage the sufferings of the people.

The above resolutions were sequel to a motion of urgent national public importance considered and adopted on the floor of the House during plenary on Wednesday. The motion was brought by a representative from the state, Mr. Yusuf Gagdi.

The House in a unanimous resolution urged the federal government to redeem the earlier pledge of N10 billion for the resettlement of victims of Plateau attacks, and to also extend similar privileges accorded to victims of crises in the north east and other parts of the country.

In his lead debate, the Plateau member pointed out that “these barbaric killings have caused a serious breach of peace in some parts of the Jos north and Bassa Local Government Areas but we are grateful to God, and the efforts of the Governor of Plateau State, Rt. Hon Simon Bako Lalong to contain the ugly trend and avoid its escalation to other part of the State.

“The said communities have no voice in this House to air their grievances, following the death of their representative, late Hon. Maitala Haruna who died on 2nd April, 2021 which was announced at House Plenary on 13th April, 2021.”

Mr. Gagdi further informed the House that an open letter has been transmitted to the President on the happenings in Plateau state, with practical suggestions on how best to handle the crisis situation in the State and beyond.

He also acknowledged and appreciated the visit of a delegation of the National Inter-religious Council to Plateau State that was headed by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman and the Sultan of Sokoto and another delegation led by  the Chief of Defense Staff.

He stressed the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to urgently conduct bye election to fill the vacant seat of Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency without further delay so that they can also have their voice back in the House.

The motion was passed when Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila put the question.

Recall that another member from Plateau, Mr. Dachung Bagos, had addressed the press wherein he called for justice to be meted out on perpetrators of the violence that has befallen the state.
