OrderPaperToday – Two Bills, bothering on Value added Tax (VAT) and business registration has scaled through first reading in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The House Leader, Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Martin Chike Amaewhule, laid the two Bills on the floor of the Rivers State House Assembly on Friday 13th August, 2021.
The Bills are, River State Residents’ Registration Agency Bill and the Rivers State Value Added Tax Bill.
The Rivers State Residents’ Registration Agency Bill is for a Law to establish the Rivers state Residents’ Registration Agency and for connected purposes.
This bill is supposed to help the Rivers State Government keep record of those who reside and do business in the state for purposes of planning and development
The Rivers State Value Added Tax Bill is for a Law to impose and charge VAT on certain goods and services and provide for the administration of the tax and for connected matters.
Recall that the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on 10th August had declared that it is the Rivers State Government (RSG) and not the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) that should collect VAT and Personal Income Tax (PIT) in the state.
However the FIRS has also lodged an appeal against the judgment of delivered by Honourable Justice Stephen Pam and a stay of execution of the said judgment.
