OrderPaperToday – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has expressed displeasure over alleged misrepresentation of his welcome address on Wednesday.
Mr. Gbajabiamila said he was mischievously misquoted and misinterpreted with regards to his comments on separationists in the country by journalists covering the House.
During the plenary on Thursday, Gbajabiamila explained that he never compared separatist agitators in the country to terrorists as widely reported and described reports of him comparing IPOB (Independent Peoples of Biafra) and Yoruba nation agitators to terrorists as “junk, yellow and uninspiring journalism”, which belittles the profession.
“I was mischievously misquoted. There is an agenda when one is misquoted. It is junk, yellow and uninspiring journalism which belittles the profession. When you deliberately misquote people then you have an agenda,” he said.
Gbajabiamila further explained that he meant criminals had taken advantage of the separationist agitations to carry their activities.
“I repeat that there are people who masquerade as separatist under genuine agitators killing and maiming, killing innocent people, stopping children from going to school and committing other acts of criminality.
“There are genuine agitators, and we know how they go about it, not the criminals we see now. ”
He further submitted that “journalists should report exactly what happens in the House.”
