OrderPaperToday – The Senate on Tuesday called for establishment of a National Environmental Research and Training Institution that will handle related challenges.
This came to the fore at a public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service on a Bill for an Act to Establish the National Environmental Research and Training Institute at National Assembly Complex.
The bill is sponsored by Senator Christopher Ekpeyoung, (PDP, Akwa-Ibom North West).
According to the sponsor, the bill was read for second time on 14th Feb, 2020 and was referred to the committee for further legislative action.
The bill is also seeking to provide necessary legal framework that will enable efficient harnessing of potentials in control.
It also sought to establish an institution that would develop policies, organisze training and conduct scientific research as a response to the scotch of environmental problems and challenges in the country.
The lawmaker also noted that there is no specific Government institution conducting research into environmental issues.
He is convinced that establishment of this institute will provide a veritable framework for environmental research development, training and policy formulations and identification of environmental issues through scientific methodology that would foster proper management of our environment.
The chairman of the committee, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau (APC, Kano Central), in his address noted that environment has a lot of bearing on the existence of Nigerians.
