The senate also wants the company to adopt pay-per-view system of billing in line with global best practices.
A motion moved by Sen. Isah Misau (APC, Bauchi Central) in the Senate on Wednesday led the upper chamber to direct its committees on Information and Trade to investigate the South African company.
The committees were mandated to summon the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) to find out why the alleged exploitations were being allowed.
The Senate also directed the committees to conduct a public hearing for all stakeholders as well as civil society organisations and ensure that the service provider employs pay as you go.
The probe is to examine allegations undue hike in cost of services as well.
In his remark, the President of the Senate Bukola Saraki charged the committees to extend their investigation to other service sectors in Nigeria where there is wanton exploitation.
While moving the motion Sen. Misau noted that Multichoice has dominated the Nigerian television industry and used such advantage negatively to exploit Nigerians.
He said that in the last few years, the satellite TV provider had been in the news due to so many aggrieved customers who are protesting exploitation especially in relation to services provided.
Misau said that the complaints had included arbitrary increase in subscription charges, refusal to adopt the pay as you see model applicable in other climes where Multichoice operates.
He question why the DSTV is allowed to have monopoly of airing the English Premier League in Nigeria which is one area the major exploitation goes on.
He noted that although the CPC had already commenced investigation into the many complaints, it was pertinent for the Senate to intervene and protect Nigerians.
He recalled that an attempt by the 7th House of Representatives to clamp down on Multi Choice was not fruitful and therefore prayed the Senate to take the matter with all seriousness.
Other senators who contributed expressed displeasure at how the service provider had almost double the price of the various bouquets within the last five years for no just cause.
They insisted that it was time the Senate intervened and goes hard on Multi Choice and other service providers that exploit Nigerians, flouting all known international best practices.
Na dem even get money to be exploited. Talaka no dey see light talkless of subscribing to DSTV.
