OrderPaperToday – The Senate has confirmed President Muhamadu Buhari’s nominees for the positions of military service chiefs and the Chief of Defence Staff.
Maj. Gen Lucky Irabor was confirmed as Defence Chief; Maj. Gen Ibrahim Attahiru as Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Auwal Gambo as Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao as Chief of Air Staff.
The confirmation followed the consideration of the report submitted by the Chairman Joint Committee on Defence, Aliu Wamakko, (APC, Sokoto).
It would be recalled that on the 10th of February, 2021, the President sent the names of the new military chiefs to the Senate for confirmation.
Last week, the House of Representatives confirmed the military nominees.
Speaking on the report of the screening, Sen. Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano) described the nominees as “highly capable.”
Speaking on the confirmed military chiefs, Senate President Ahmad Lawan urged the new officers to double up efforts to combat rising insecurity, saying: “We are in a very serious situation. The bucks will stop on their table as far as operations are concerned. We expect them to take the fight to the bandits and terrorists.
“In a situation where bandits will take 300 students into the thin air, this is not acceptable. This is looking more like an industry. Some people are benefitting from this, and we need to unravel those people benefitting from it.”
