OrderPaperToday – The senate today adopted a motion by Senator Stella Oduah (PDP, Anambra) on flood control and construction of dams to check problem which has led to loss of lives and properties worth trillions of naira across the country.
In adopting the motion, the senate urged the Federal Government to convene a stakeholders meeting to x-ray the recurring situation with the view of proffering a lasting solution to the menace. The senate expressed worries at the devastating effects of flooding disasters in parts of Nigeria.
The senate also urged the Ministry of Water Resources to revisit the proposed construction of Dasin Hausa Dam to take in the flood waters from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, including control of all other dams.
In her motion, Senator Oduah said the recent flooding has caused avoidable loss of lives in many communities along the Niger-Benue River trough.
She also noted that the 2012 flooding alone have resulted in colossal loss of property to the tune of N2.6 trillion which could have built several dams to curb the menace.
After deliberations, senate commended all relevant agencies, organizations and individuals whose efforts in creating awareness have led to reduction in casualty level.
