OrderPaperToday – President of the Senate Bukola Saraki has said the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) is a top priority for the 8th senate as it has become an item in the legislative agenda of his administration.

Saraki said this Monday at the national assembly during the inauguration of a set of standing committees.

Noting that “the oil and gas industry remains the lifeblood of the Nigerian economy,” the senate president lamented the non-passage of the petroleum bill in the last sixth and seventh assemblies.

In this regard, he particularly charged the Petroleum Upstream, Petroleum Downstream and Gas Committees to immediately get down to work, adding that in a matter of weeks, the senate should begin consideration of the first set of bills on the industry reforms.

“The Senate expects that you to pay very close attention to these bills and treat them with dispatch so that we can quickly move towards the implementation of the reforms which have become long overdue,” he said.

Among the Committees inaugurated are Petroleum Upstream; Petroleum Downstream; Gas; Education (Basic & Secondary); Women Affairs; Employment, Labour & Productivity; Establishment & Public Service; Culture & Tourism; Special Duties; and States & Local Government Affairs.
