OrderPaperToday – President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki on Tuesday said he will never support any attempt for the government’s to regulate media activities in the country as he believes strongly in a self-regulated media.
Senator Saraki stated this while receiving the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Waheed Odusile and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) on a visit to this office.
The President of the Senate lamented a situation where some have joined the profession with the aim of doing more harm than good.
He said the 8th Senate would support all programmes of the NUJ aimed at repositioning the media to achieve its constitutional activities.
Earlier, Mr. Odusile told the Senate President that the visit was meant to brief the leadership of the Senate on the activities of the NUJ since the new executive was elected in July this year.
He said the meeting was equally meant to seek the support of the Senate for a new legislation to professionalize the journalism profession and also to empower the NUJ to regulate the practice of journalism in the country.
According to the chairman, measures have become necessary to ensure that journalism in Nigeria is accorded its rightful place and that journalists are given their rightful due in the scheme of things, to be able to carry out their constitutional mandate.
