OrderPaperToday – Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption, Mr. Dachung Bagos (PDP, Plateau) has threatened that lawmakers would follow through on impeachment proceedings on President Muhammadu Buhari if he fails to implement the resolutions of the 40-man House Committee on insecurity and the security summit scheduled for May, 2021.
Bagos, who is also member of the House committee on national security and intelligence, warned that if resolutions arrived at the summit were not implemented by the executive arm of government “we’ll call for the resignation of the president.”
He said: “We have the power to impeach the president that he cannot do this; he can no longer secure lives and properties of Nigerians.
“This is just like the last resort, and we are taking it very seriously. We can assure Nigerians that with the resolutions that will come out of this summit, if the executive did not take the summit very seriously, then definitely, the National Assembly with hit the gavel.”
The lawmaker also expressed worry over the recent takeover of Shiroro by Boko Haram, he stated that “these people are capturing infrastructure, why is the government not strategic in dealing with the insecurity in the country”.
Recall that the House of Representatives held one of its longest executive session on Wednesday 28th April 2021 resulting in the inauguration of a 40-man Committee on insecurity which immediately called on President Buhari to declare a state of emergency on insecurity in the country. The 40 man House Committee is to be Chaired by the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila.
Recently, the Chandler Good Government Index released for the first time, placed Nigeria as the third-worst governed country in the world.
The report noted that the ability to handle corruption properly is the strongest indicator of good governance and ranked Nigeria 102 out of 104 countries with a score of 0.319 points.
