OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives on Tuesday called on security operatives to stop the incessant killings in Anambra State.
The House also proposed a-one minute-silence for those who have died due to the killings, including Dr Chike Akunyili, the husband of late Professor Dora Akunyili.
A motion that led to those resolutions was presented by Mr. Chris Azubogu (PDP, Nnewi North-South/Ekwusigo).
The motion, presented under matters of urgent national importance, lamented the increasing spate of killings in Anambra state.
Mr. Azubogu, while leading the debate, stated that hardly does a day pass without chaos and attacks on public infrastructure or private properties, and expressed worry that it could spiral into an uncontrollable situation if urgent steps were not taken.
The Anambra lawmaker charged the relevant security agencies to mobilize men and resources to ensure Anambra state returns to peace and normalcy.
During consideration of the motion, Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, asked Mr. Obinna Chidoka (PDP, Idemili, North-South) what the root cause of the issue was, to which the latter responded that violent elements had infiltrated the agitators for the state of Biafra. Accordingly, they have turned on any government or political structure to wreak violence on them.
The motion was adopted after the presiding officer, Speaker Gbajabiamila, put it to a vote.
Therefore, the House resolved to call on the House committees on National Security/ Intelligence and Police affairs to ensure the prayers of the motion are carried out and report back to the House within three weeks for more legislative action.
