OrderPaperToday – The Supplementary Budget of N465.6 billion as requested for approval by President Muhammadu Buhari has sailed through second reading at Thursday’s plenary session of the House of Representatives.
Debate on the budget bill however experienced some drama between members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, and their All Progressives Congress (APC) counterparts led by Majority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila.
In leading debate on the bill, Gbajabiamila called on members to speedily pass the budget in view of the fuel scarcity and other challenges facing citizens.
Mr. Ogor and others like Mrs. Nkiruka Onyegeocha (Abia State, PDP) opposed the budget on the ground that the 2015 budget is yet to be implemented.
According to Onyegeocha, “there was no need for a supplementary budget because 31st December is fast approaching emphasising that the 2015 budget as approved has not been exhausted.”
Speaker Yakubu Dogara however calmed the situation following his explanation that the House should consider the the interest of the common man who will benefit from the supplementary budget.
The bill eventually scaled second reading and was subsequently referred to the committees on Appropriation and Finance for further legislative action.
It will be recalled that President Buhari on Wednesday wrote to the National Assembly seeking for the approval of N465.6 billion as supplementary budget.
