OrderPaperToday – An intervention by the House of Representatives committee on Health Services and the Ministry of Health has led to a resolution of the unrest that had engulfed the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, Imo State.

Accordingly a five man Interim Management Committee to take over all administrative, technical, operational and financial functions of the centre has been constituted to restore healthcare services interrupted by the crisis.

It would be recalled that the FMC, Owerri have been experiencing crisis since April this year when the Medical Director (MD) of the Centre, Dr. Angela Uwakwem brought a proposal to the Top Management Committee (TMC) meeting to introduce Public Private Partnership in some revenue generating departments of the hospital in order to entrench accountability in service delivery and to improve the revenue generating capacity of the hospital.

Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole while at the inauguration of the committee at the Health ministry in Abuja on Monday disclosed amongst nine other terms of reference expected of the committee is that it will review the events leading up to the industrial unrest and ensure inter/intra professional harmony among all cadres of staff.

Adewole therefore enjoined the committee to deliver on their mandate and restore peace in the FMC, Owerri.

Head of the Interim Management Committee, Prof. Ndubisi Eke in his remarks pledged to deliver on or before the six months deadline assigned to the committee.

On his part, Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, Chike Okafor while at the inauguration assured that with the inauguration, the industrial action has been put to an end.

An earlier visit by a combined team of the minister of health and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Health Services at the first week of December, 2015 to resolve the industrial action with the FMC management and Unions had yielded no positive results.
