Reps condemn killing of pregnant woman, demands justice

According to the motion sponsor, reports coming from his constituents paint a harrowing picture of a community of Nigerians dealing with recurring issues of Police brutality and extrajudicial killings.

The House of Representatives has condemned in strong terms, the violence, killings, and unscrupulous behavior of personnel of the Police and other government security agencies, which led to the death of a pregnant woman and five others in Oshodi/Isolo II Federal Constituency.

The House also mandated the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the mayhem and ensure that those responsible face the full wrath of the law within 4 days.

Also, it urged relevant security agencies to provide adequate security measures and personnel to safeguard the people in Oshodi-lsolo federal constituency of Lagos State.

These resolutions contained in a motion entitled “Motion On The Urgent Need To Save The Lives Of People Of Oshodi-Isolo It Federal Constituency From Killings, Further Unscrupulous Behaviours And Attacks By Police And Other Government Agencies,” sponsored by Rep Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi (LP, Lagos).

Leading the debate, Rep. Onuakalusi lamented the incident and other situations, where security personnel endanger the lives of the citizens instead of protecting them.

“It is with heavy heart that I address the House today on the urgent need to save the lives of the people of Oshodi Isolo II Federal Constituency from the unrelenting wave of violence, killings, behavior unscrupulous and attacks by Officers of the Nigerian Police and LASMA, which have tragically resulted in the death of Five people, a pregnant woman and with her two children and tricycle driver.”

Okey-Joe also decried the mayhem recently unleashed on the residents of Ago Road and its axis by Police and LASMA Officers on Tuesday 03 October 2023.

According to him, “The people of Oshodi Isolo II Federal Constituency, have been living in constant fear and anguish for far too long. The recent spate of violence and attacks by the Police and LASMA officers have created a state of insecurity that threatens not only their lives but also their livelihoods in Nigeria Our communities have witnessed untoward harassment and intimidation.

“Informed that these officers were chasing a car and dragging the steering of a moving car with the driver and in the Process the vehicle lost control and got wrecked.”

The lawmaker worried that the situation in his constituency is not any different from what Nigerians in other communities go through.

“The reports from my constituents paint a harrowing picture of a community of Nigerians, with Police brutality and extrajudicial killings being a recurring nightmare. It is our duty as representatives of the people to protect, and I stand before you today to seek your support in this endeavor.”

In adopting the motion, the House observed a minute of silence for the victims even as resolved to send four members to Oshodi /Isolo II to commiserate with the families, and equally meet with the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly as a show of solidarity.

It further mandated the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to provide relief and support to the victims of the violence in Oshodi Isolo II Federal Constituency.
