OrderPaperToday – Minister of Interior, Abdulraman Danbazau has said plans are underway to merge the Police Service Commission and the Interior Ministry as part of efforts to reposition the Nigeria Police.
Danbazau made this disclosure on Tuesday in Abuja when the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs had an interface with him.
According to Danbazau, ”we want to change peoples perception about the Nigeria Police. We want to see how the professionalism of police can be improved upon in terms of equipment ” amongst others.
Among these agencies to be affected are: Police, Interpol, Police Housing scheme.The retired general said though the repositioning may take time but assured that those that can be tackled in the short term are taken into consideration.
Members of the Committee including Mr. Johnson Agbonayeiwa and Mr. Raphael Igbokwe called for the need to check extra judicial killings by police and other uniform men as well as the rehabilitation of the police barracks.
They said these will enable the masses to have confidence in officers and men of the force.
The Committee further called for the need for community policing to aid intelligence gathering in the country.
