Rep Dawodu argued that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation failed in its task of promoting and educating the public about the inclusion of PWD.

The House of Representatives has urged State Governments to domesticate the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities. PWD (Prohibition) Law in their respective states.

This is even as it directed the Ministry of Information and National Orientation and religious organisations to sensitise the public about the discrimination against persons with disability.

These resolutions followed the adoption of a motion on the “Need to Create Awareness Programmes for Persons with Disability” which was moved at the plenary on Tuesday.

The sponsor of the motion, Rep.  Bashiru Dawodu (APC, Lagos), observed that 23 of the 36 states are yet to domesticate the law in their States.

This, he said, has allowed for continued discrimination, stigmatization, and non-inclusion of persons living with disabilities in the private and public sectors.

According to him, About 15% of the country’s about 250 million population, persons living with disabilities constitute one of the marginalised groups within the Nigerian society contrary to section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The lawmaker further noted that the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 was signed into law to ensure full participation and inclusion of people living with disabilities in all sectors of the economy.

“However, the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, tasked with promoting and educating the public about the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities is ineffective,” he submitted.

The House also directed the Committee of Disabilities to ensure compliance.
