OrderPaperToday – Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives have all decided to open Twitter accounts in defiance and challenge of the All Progressive Congress (APC) led Federal Government Twitter Ban.
This announcement was made via a tweet from a PDP support group barely 24 hours after the PDP Caucus in the House of Representatives led by Chinda Kingsley staged a walk out in protest of the Twitter Ban.
At resumption of Plenary on Tuesday June 08, Chinda prayed the House to urge the Executive arm of Government to reverse the Twitter Ban in the interim pending the outcome of the House parley with the Executive arm in 10 days time.
The motion was shut down by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila for being out of order.
At this point the leader of the PDP Caucus in the House staged a walk out alongside other members of the House voted in under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party.
At a subsequent press briefing, Chinda in a widely circulated video revealed that the PDP Caucus in the House of Representatives were ready to be jailed for tweeting and exercising their freedom of expression via Twitter, the microblogging platform.” If they want to jail us, jail us if we have committed an offense, we surrender ourselves on behalf of Nigerians”.
However Principal Officers of the People’s Democratic Party were however conspicuously missing in action as non of them showed up for today’s Plenary session, they include Hon. Ndudi Elumelu – Minority Leader (PDP Delta), Hon. Gideon Lucas – Minority Whip (PDP Kaduna), Hon. Toby Okechukwu – Deputy Minority Leader (PDP Enugu) and Hon. Adesegun Adekoya Abdul Majid – Deputy Minority Whip (PDP Ogun).
Recall that the Minority Caucus in the House led by Hon Ndudi Elumelu had earlier condemned the Twitter Ban calling it “obnoxious, provocative and unjustifiable”.
