Following Wednesday’s resolutions reached by the Senate on the outrageous increase in Pay-TV tariffs, the Upper Chamber has constituted a seven-man committee to probe the hike introduced by service providers operating in Nigeria

The development follows a call by the Senate to all Pay-TV service providers to immediately review their bouquet prices downwards in tandem with the prevailing economic realities in Nigeria.

The motion which was sponsored by Senator Abba Patrick Moro (PDP, Benue North), was titled ‘Nigerians Dumbfounded, outraged over Pay-TV Tariff Hikes, Demand for Pay-Per-View Subscription Model.’

President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan in announcing the composition of the Adhoc Committee, tasked the panel to carry out a comprehensive investigation into how other countries are billed by Pay-TV service providers.

According to Lawan, the Deputy Whip, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC, Niger North), was appointed as the Chairman of the Adhoc Committee. Members of the committee include Senators Suleiman Abdu Kwari, Oluremi Tinubu, Yusuf A. Yusuf, Lekan Mustapha, Chukwuka Utazi, Akon Eyakenyi.

While considering the motion, the Senate had earlier kicked against the increase in tariffs by Pay-TV operators, especially MultiChoice, and sought to compel the service providers to adopt a Pay-Per-View subscription model.
