Today, the senate summoned the minister of aviation and aerospace, Festus Keyamo, to address incessant flight delays and cancellations. It also set up a review panel to address contentious issues in the tax reform bills.
Tax bills: Senate opts for further consultations
The senate has instructed its finance committee to halt further action on the proposed tax reform bills pending the outcome of a high-level meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
Announcing the decision during today’s plenary, Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin revealed that a special committee has been formed to address contentious issues in the bill. The meeting is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Thursday, December 5th.
This move comes after extensive deliberations among lawmakers aimed at resolving disagreements over key provisions in the proposed legislation, which have recently sparked debates among stakeholders.
Members of the special committee include: Sen. Abba Moro as chairman while the members are; Senators Tahir Monguno, Aliero Adamu, Orji Uzor Kalu, Seriake Dickson, Titus Zam, Yahaya Abdullahi, Solomon Olamilekan, Sani Musa, Tokunbo Abiru and the entire leadership of the senate.
Senate summons aviation minister over flight worries
The senate has mandated its committee on aviation to invite the minister of aviation and aerospace, Festus Keyamo, the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, Airline operators and other relevant stakeholders to unravel the circumstances behind the incessant flight delays and cancellations in the country. The investigation will uncover the root causes of the airline delays and cancellations and propose lasting solutions. This resolution followed the adoption of a motion presented by Sen. Abdulfatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North) on the incessant delayed and cancelled flights by airline operators in Nigeria.
Buhari stressed that this development is worrisome as air travel is one of the most reliable, dependable and quicker means of transportation, often undertaken for business/official purposes and to keep to other scheduled appointments, which are usually time bound.
Senate passes bill on police training institutions
A bill to provide a legal framework for the construction of training facilities for the Nigerian Police Force was passed by the senate. This came after the chairman of the committee on police affairs, Sen. Abdulhamid Ahmed (APC, Jigawa East) presented a report stating that the bill’s passage would help improve the institutions’ operations and eventually, increase the ability of police officers to achieve better outcomes. The senate thereafter dissolved into the committee of the whole to consider the clause of the bill and subsequently passed it.
Senate passes 2024 investment security bill
The senate has passed the investment and security repeal and re-enactment bill, 2024. This was sequel to the adoption of a report of the committee on capital market at plenary. Sen. Osita Izunaso (APC, Imo West), who chaired the committee and presented the report, stated that the capital market, although revolutionary when it first started, needed significant systemic changes to conform to changing financial market and regulatory frameworks around the world after many years of operation.
Senate passes 3 House bills
The senate has passed three House bills for concurrence. The bills are; Nigeria port economic regulatory agency bill, maize export bill, federal university of environment and technology, koroma/saakpenwa, tai ogoni (establishment) bill. According to the Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele who presented the bills, the bills have gone through the necessary legislative processes in the house of representatives. The senate thereafter resolved into the committee of the whole subsequently passed the bills.
