As lawmakers in Nigeria’s Tenth National Assembly resume legislative business this week, the composition of Standing Committees is expected to take centre stage.

This series on Special Committees in the National Assembly is thus dedicated to providing insights into how the Chairpersons and Members of various Committees in both chambers of the federal parliament emerge.

This article is the second in the series and is on the Committee on Selection in the House of Representatives.

According to the House Standing Orders, a Committee on Selection will be constituted within the first thirty legislative days following the first sitting of the House of Representatives. 

 

COMPOSITION 

  • The Committee on Selection shall consist of the Speaker of the House, Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Majority Leader, Deputy Chief Whip, Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader, Minority Whip and Deputy Minority Whip.
  • The Speaker, who is the Chairman of the Committee, can also co-opt other members in a way that reflects the equality of the country’s geo-political zones if the need arises.READ ALSO: Parliament Meme: Special Committees in the Nigerian Senate (Part 1)

 

FUNCTIONS

  •  Nominate members of the House to serve on Standing and Special Committees or any Adhoc Committees to consider any special matter brought before the House.

  • They also nominate members that may be going on parliamentary delegations other than Committtees
  • The Committee on Selection also monitors, reviews and evaluates the performance of Committees, their Chairpersons and Deputies on a quarterly basis.
  • It is also to partake in the performance of other businesses as the Speaker may bring before it.
