OPINION: Rep Danjuma Shiddi and his quest for an upset in Taraba

Writer, Ibrahim Gaddafi Tanko highlights the achievements of Taraba lawmaker, Danjuma Usman Shiddi, in his quest to stage a major upset in the 2023 election for Taraba South Senatorial District

The lawmaker representing Ibi/Wukari Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Danjuma Usman Shiddi, assumed office in the nation’s lower legislative chamber under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2015.

It is near certain that he was under no illusion about lawmaking being a walk in the park. As such, it was not surprising when in an unprecedented move, he moved the motion for the construction of the Ibi Bridge shortly after his inauguration.

The Ibi Bridge is a critical infrastructure that will link the North-Eastern part of Nigeria and the North Central to ease the plight of travellers who have to make use of ferries to cross the Benue River at Ibi; one of the local government areas that makes up his constituency.

That singular first impressive legislative action was instrumental to President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval for the immediate award of the contract for the construction of the bridge amounting to over 57 billion Naira. This contributed to a boost in the economy in the federal constituency and Taraba South Senatorial District at large; leading to the direct employment of hundreds of his constituents at the site.

Not resting on his oars, the federal lawmaker has been at the forefront of sponsoring bills and motions that have a direct bearing on the lives of Nigerians, especially in his federal constituency.

Worthy of mention is the bill seeking to establish the Federal College of Fisheries Ibi, Taraba State, slated to be mentioned for second reading at the House of Representatives. The bill if passed is expected to scale up research in the areas of fish production and aquatics for the purpose of harnessing the huge potential in the areas of aquatic agriculture in the country.

The lawmaker has also instituted an annual Scholarship Scheme for his constituents in tertiary institutions across the country, constructed feeder roads, constructed and renovated blocks of classrooms, primary health care centres, and facilitated employment opportunities for a significant number of youths in his constituency.

There is no denying the fact that Shiddi; an astute parliamentarian, visionary politician, and cerebral gentleman who chairs the House Committee on Internal Security has raised the bar in legislative representation. Importantly also, he is inculcating a culture of all-inclusive politics with the youths occupying a prominent place in his political movement.

With his defection to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in furtherance of his ambition to represent Taraba South in Nigeria’s Upper Legislative Chamber, the Bayero University Graduate may just be on the verge of causing a political upset.

With his gaze fixed on the plum job, he will be squaring up against incumbent Governor, Darius Ishaku for the seat.
