OrderPaperToday -A bill seeking the establishment of the Northeast Development Commission scaled a second reading on the floor of the senate Wednesday.
Sponsor of the bill, Senator Kabiru Gaya said the bill will focus on the development of states in North East region, as well as reconstruction and rehabilitation of victims of boko haram violence.
Senator Gaya said ‘the north-east is one of the most agricultural viable and peaceful region in Nigeria attracting people of different tribes, religion and geographical location.’
He said the bill also seeks to tackle development challenges of the north-east in all ramifications, breach gap created by non-existing legal frameworks that tackle emerging development challenges of the north-east.
According to him, the bill also seeks to create an institution that centrally coordinates all intervention measures targeted towards the development of the north-east, creates platform for all stakeholders including the federal government to engage in reconstruction, repatriation and rehabilitation of the north-east and victims of insurgency.
