OrderPaperToday – Nigerians stand the risk of starving to death by the year 2050 if nothing is done to ensure an all year round farming in the country.

This was made known by Minister of Agriculture, Mr  Audu  Ogbeh on Thursday when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Agriculture to defend the 2016 Budget Proposal of his ministry.

Ogbeh who said the current mode of farming would not sustain the increasing population in the country stressed a need for all major stakeholders to work towards  improving  mechanized farming and irrigation.

He said: “Four or five months of farm activity cannot sustain the country for 12 months. Besides  by 2050 Nigeria’s population will be very close to 500 million going by the current rate of growth.

“This is just 34 years from now.  If we carry on  at the current rate  of one crop  per year and very low mechanization,  Nigeria runs a risk of starving to death.”

The minister said his ministry had written to state governments to encourage them to develop dams and canals so that “agriculture becomes an all year round activity and it is not confined to the rainy season alone.”

  4. What type of talk is this; I reject all their doomed prophecies in all entirety! But Audu OGBEH and generation yet unborn will start starving to death frm this minute till 2050 and beyond IJN! Agbaya

  5. I don’t see anything wrong in what he said that warranted all these insults……The minister is only emphasising on the dangers of seasonal farming practices to our overgrowing populations…and the needs for irrigation farming in Nigeria.

  6. this man is saying the truth because 60% nigerians don’t want to go for farming again, instead of that go into yahoo, fraud, the one that even study agric in school looking forward to work in Oil company…….

    • Be that as it may, it’s wrong for him to be a prophet of doom. We faces life challenges daily but will still look forward to a better and brighter future

  7. I reject it for myself, families and friends in Jesus name, Amen. I return this word back to the person who said it in Jesus name, Amen

  9. BASTARD NIGERIAN GOVERNMENTS! May GOD of thunder and fire deal with them all… Amen. DAMN! What a country we are. #SMH..

  10. With all the great achievements of Adesina( predecessor to Ogbe), it has been swept under the carpet just the normal APC way of rediculing Jonathan regime, for me Akinwumi Adesina policies should be strongly consolidated on, now that he is ADB boss, it is an avenue for pa Ogbe to explore better opportunities for our Agricultural sector, instead of spelling doom on us. Discrediting our predecessors is the major bane of African development. If go round the states in Nigeria, most of the lowsides are abandoned project……incumbent governor wiil rather use 4billion to prove that a project embarked upon by his predecessor is useless rather than use 500million to complete the project.

  11. The message is for u and ur family. Oloriburuku Agbalagba Ofo. God wil not allow u to complete this tenure in Jesus Name.

  14. All that we hear since this administration began are bad news, if this administration knew this will happen why is the budget of information is far more than agriculture. Why didn’t Buhari assume the power of agric ministry instead of petroleum. Stop deceiving people and get down to work.
