OrderPaperToday – The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) has disowned a N1bn lodgment into its account by a contractor whose name was not revealed.
The disclaimer happened during a hearing by the House of Representatives Committee on Finance which was looking into the books of the NCS.
An assistant controller general of NCS, Ahmed Magaji, the director of budget and finance of the service made the disclosure when he appeared before the Committee to explain the financial status of NCS from its revenue sources.
He further explained that upon discovery that the funds were wrongly posted, the NCS immediately reported the matter to the office of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) to revert the funds which he noted did not belong to the Service.
According to Magaji, the NCS has been working to return the said amount to the contractor since 2019 as the records still reflect in the Service’s account even when it did not access the funds
He also revealed that NCS’s withholding tax for the year 2019 stood at N1.14 billion, although he failed to give details of other financial transactions as sought by members of the committee.
While ruling on the matter, the committee, chairman, James Faleke gave the NCS two weeks to reappear with relevant documents to back their claims on the ‘ghost’ N1bn.
