NASS assures of budget passage before Christmas

OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives has expressed it readiness to pass the budget (Appropriation Bill 2022) before proceeding on Christmas holidays.

Speaking to journalists in the National Assembly on Thursday, spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, disclosed that the Appropriation Committee of the House was almost done with collating the budget of all House Committees and ready to present its report on 14th December 2021.

According to Kalu, “as you know we are winding down for the end of the year holiday and you know what we have been dealing with recently, the budget. Many have asked privately, are you sure this year’s presentation would be done early enough in order to ensure that January-December calendar will not be messed up with.

“And my answer has always been determined- we are committed to ensuring that this year’s own will not be different from the previous years.

“So tentatively we would be laying the report on the budget on the 14th of December, tentatively. I said so because if there’s any little extending it is one day before or one day after.

“So let’s be hopeful, everything goes as planned. As it is most of the Committees have sent in their reports about what they have done so far with the MDAs, so we’re not lacking in anyway.

“The Appropriation Committee is busy going through all the reports of the Committees to make sure that the envelope for every ministry, agency or department are in order with what has been provided for them.

“We are on course with regards the budget and the calendar is very dear to us, and we are going to ensure that it’s not different from the previous ones,” Kalu noted.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had on the 7th October 2021 formally laid the N16.39 trillion budget for 2022 fiscal year tagged, ‘Budget of Economic Growth and Sustainability’ before the joint session of the National Assembly.
