OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) to investigate the level of production of bitumen and its utilization in Nigeria by Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company.
The move by the House followed a motion sponsored by Mr. Bede Eke (PDP, Imo) during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Debating the motion, Eke noted that the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company has an installed capacity to produce about 650,000 tonnes of bitumen annually which is more than the 500,000 tonnes consumed annually in the country.
The lawmaker therefore expressed worries that over N300 billion is being lose as a result of the non-patronage by construction companies of the bitumen produced in the country and the heavy dependence on importation of the product which negatively affect the nation’s economy.
He said if local production and utilization of bitumen is encouraged, it would boost the nation’s economy and prevent the wastage of foreign exchange on the product.
To this end, the House adopted the motion and urged the relevant committee to report back within eight weeks for further legislative action.
