Sahabi in his motion addressed the need to check illegal mining activities in the country.

He further urged the Federal Government “to address consequential effect of illegal mining of environmental degradation and health hazards in Plateau State and other affected States of the federation and to reclaim mining ponds; and federal government to initiate presidential committee on solid mineral as was done on rice, cotton etc, in order to promote wealth creation, job opportunities and enhance diversification policy of the federal government of Nigeria.”

Similarly, he further urged the Senate “to mandate the committee on solid minerals, steel development and metallurgy to engage the minister of mines and steel development; and other stakeholders on providing a proper legal framework to guide optimum prospecting and exploitation of the nation’s solid mineral resources in safe, economic and environmental friendly ways.”

It is worthy of note that Zamfara is one of the states in Nigeria adversely affected by the activities of illegal mining, which may possibly have contributed to the insecurity bedeviling the state.

Sen. Mohammed Hassan Gusau (APC, Zamfara Central) a senator from 2007-2011 before his re-election in 2019 sponsored no motion and petition during the period under review; likewise Sen. Lawali Hassan Anka (APC, Zamfara West) a former House member of House of Representatives.

On a global scale, Zamfara Senate team contributed 0.7% of the motions sponsored in the 9th Senate at midterm.
