OrderPaperToday: The North-west geopolitical zone and the largest of the six zones in Nigeria is made up of seven states as against others with six and five (south-east) respectively.
The senators from the seven states totaling 21 have 95 bills to their credit constituting 13.3% of the 716 bills sponsored in the first half of the 9th national Assembly.
It is worrisome to note that of the 21 senators from the seven states of the north-west geopolitical zone, there is no female representation as against other geopolitical zones.
On the newbies’ performance in the Senate, notable of them from the region include: Sen. Uba Sani (APC, Kaduna Central) and Sen. Suleiman Abdu Kwari (APC, Kaduna North) both from Kaduna State, having 21 and 14 bills to their credit respectively. And they appear at positions three and eight respectively on the Senate newbies chart.
The north-west has four ex-governors, making it the second state with the highest number of ex-governors in the Senate after the south-east. The Senators are: Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC, Sokoto North) from Sokoto State with 6 bills, Sen. Ibrahim Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano South) of Kano State who has 3 bills, Sen. Mohammed Adamu Mainasara Aliero (APC, Kebbi Central) of Kebbi State with 2 bills, and Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau (APC, Kano Central) from Kano State, who is yet to sponsor any bill since the beginning of the first two years of the 9th National Assembly.
Of the 21 Senators from the region, Sen. Gobir Ibrahim Abdullahi (APC, Sokoto East) appears to be the longest serving Senator. He has been in the Senate since 2011. In the last two years he has sponsored 4 bills.
