OrderPaperToday: The Senators from the six states making the south-west geopolitical zone have got a mixed performance in terms of bill sponsorship in the first half of the 9th National Assembly.
The states performance analysis for bill sponsorship reveals that senators from Ekiti had a total of 29 bills constituting 19.6% of the 716 bills sponsored by 9th assembly senators.
Similarly, senators from Ondo State got 23 bills constituting 15.5%; and Oyo senators got 26 bills making 17.6% as against Osun state counterparts with 19 bills constituting 12.2 %, which is the lowest in the region.
The zone pulled a total 148 bills, constituting 20.7% of the 716 bills sponsored in the first half of the 9th Senate.
Of the 18 senators from the south-west, only two are females. They are: Sen. Oluremi Shade Tinubu (APC, Lagos Central) with 5 Bills to her credit, of which only two has been passed. Similarly, Sen. Biodun Christine Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti South) on her part has also sponsored 5 bills of which 3 are at the committee stage.
Sen. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), who is a newbie from the region, comes in at number five on the newbies chart with 17 bills to his name. Of his 17 bills, 8 are in the committee stage while others are just on first reading. It is interesting to note that he is the topmost of the senators from the zone in terms of bills sponsorship. However, his performance may be largely due to his previous legislative experience as a member of the House of Representatives.
The zone has Sen. Ibikunle Oyelaja Amosun (APC, Ogun Central) as the only ex-governor from the region and has sponsored 15 Bills so far. Interestingly, he tops the ex-governors bills chart and it is worthy of note that he was a senator before he became a governor.
Sen. Borofice Robert Ajayi (APC, Ondo North), Deputy Majority Leader of the Senate and one of the longest serving senators is the only Principal officer from the region and he has 5 bills to his credit.
