#NewsRoundup: Bauchi Senator wins guber ticket, “Lawan may go if he blocks Buhari’s impeachment”

Across the length and breadth of Nigeria, here are the biggest stories around Nigeria’s legislators and the institution of parliament you mustn’t miss this Friday:

Bauchi Senator wins NNPP guber ticket

The lawmaker representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Haliru Jika has emerged as the State gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP).

The NNPP conducted a fresh primary on Thursday following the withdrawal of its erstwhile candidate, after 630 delegates unanimously adopted Senator Jika in a voice vote.

“Since Senator Jika is now the only aspirant in the race, I hereby affirm him as the gubernatorial candidate of the NNPP in Bauchi State,” he said.

“We won’t allow Lawan to block Buhari’s sack” – Senator

There are indications that opposition lawmakers may be plotting to impeach the Senate President, in the event that he attempts to shield President Muhammadu from impeachment.

The lawmaker representing Osun East Senatorial District, Francis Fadahunsi, who disclosed this in an interview with journalists on Wednesday, noted that Senator Ahmad Lawan has in the past been frustrating all moves to take drastic measures against the President.

“We have now made up our mind to strike now that the iron is still hot instead of wasting our time, cooperating with the Ahmad Lawan leadership while the nation is being destroyed by terrorists with no plan by the government to stop them. We won’t wait until we are all killed.

We have now decided to pull out of the ‘rubber stamp’ arrangement so that the whole of Nigeria would know that we have not been in support of the failing economy, the huge debts accumulation, falling naira, insecurity across the country and the unprecedented forms of corruption going on in the polity,” he said.

Buhari Must Go: “Impeachment threat against Buhari is real” – Senator Bassey

The lawmaker representing Cross River South Senatorial District, Gershom Bassey has refuted opinions describing the impeachment plot against President Muhammadu Buhari as unserious.

In an interview with journalists on Thursday, Bassey urged critics of the lawmakers to impress on the President to act swiftly within six weeks, which is the first part of their threat and not lay emphasis yet on the impeachment.

“Our best hope is that the President will respond to what we are saying, to what we are doing. And at the end of six weeks, everything would have been sorted out,” he noted.
