Olulade noted that the outbreak of Lassa Fever, which is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness is highly contagious through contacts with food or household items that have been contaminated with rats’ excreta, urine or body fluids of infected persons.

He also explained that the House was aware of the increasing number of rats in homes, markets, parks, streets and other public places in the state and their attendant breeding propensity which can aid the further spread of the disease beyond human imagination.

He expressed worry that inadequate information on the outbreak, symptoms and management of the virus can aggravate the spread of the disease in the state.

According to him, “if timely actions are not taken to sensitize the constituents on the need to improve sanitary conditions of the environment in order to keep rats away from homes, the effort of the state government in curbing the spread of the infectious virus many not yield the desired results.”

The House, however, called on the state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to direct the Ministries of Information & Strategy; Health and relevant agencies of the state to intensify efforts on their enlightenment campaigns on the outbreak, causes, prevention and control of the lassa fever virus.

All the members were also urged to go back to their various constituencies to sensitize their constituents on the outbreak, causes, prevention and control of the Lassa Fever Virus.
