OrderPaperToday – Some residents of Lagos have protested rising crime wave and insecurity in the state and other parts of the country.

Under the aegis of Africa Arise for Change (AAFC), the group on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly where they called on President Muhammadu Buhari to step up security of lives and property in the country.

The group also noted that the waves of violence, robbery and kidnapping in the state had become worrisome and asked Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to rise up to the occasion.

Executive Director of the group, Mrs. Comfort Solape, explained that the protest was to call the attention of the President and governor that mothers now live in fear following the recent kidnap school children in Lagos State.

She said: “As concerned mothers of the nation, our walk is to draw the attention of our father, President Muhammadu Buhari and other senior government officials to the worrisome state of security we live under.

“Just last week, armed gunmen stormed a school in Ikorodu area of Lagos and abducted three female pupils in broad daylight. This development has left all parents, especially mothers in pains as we are no longer certain of what can befall our beloved children while in school custody.

“Within few days of the girls’ abduction, hell was left loose in Mile 12 in an ethnic fueled riot that sadly led to the loss of lives and property.

“That such ethnic oriented strife could surface in Lagos speaks volume of how an era of intolerance rapidly crept upon us without us realising.”

The group, which condemned the waves of violence in the country, stressed that the nefarious activities of Fulani herdsmen should be tamed by the government.

Addressing the group, Majority Leader of the assembly, Mr. Sanai Agunbiade said some of the recent cases of insecurity also bothered the lawmakers.

Agunbiade, who told the protesters that the assembly had condemned the Mile 12 violence and the kidnap of school children, said government would not relent in its efforts to strengthen the security of lives and property.
