The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama has assured that the federal government will on Wednesday, commence evacuation of Nigerians stranded by the Ukraine crisis.

Onyeama disclosed this Monday, in a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, at the National Assembly in Abuja.

He noted that the evacuation effort will be focused on Nigerians who have successfully crossed the borders to Poland and other countries.

In his response, Gbajabiamila urged the Minister on the need for proactivity in situations such as this.

“…need to be in a state of readiness at all times. There has to be a plan readily available for this kind of situation,” the Speaker said.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin had last Thursday, announced a military operation in Ukraine, which was followed by reports of explosions in Kyiv, the country’s capital, as well as several other cities, according to AFP correspondents.
