OrderPaperToday- Worried by the exorbitant cost of electricity meters in the country, the House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC) to compel and direct Distributing Companies(DISCOs) to immediately install prepaid meters free of charge.
The unanimous decision by the House followed a motion raised by Abubakar Yunusa, member representing Yamaltu Deba Federal Constituency, Gombe State during Wednesday’s plenary session.
Raising the motion, Yunusa noted that an average electricity consumer frequently complains of the billing system’s high charges.
According to him, “single phase which previously costs N23,000, now cost N49,000 while the three phase which earlier costs N49,000 has increased to N69,000.”
The lawmaker explained that the NERC has remained adamant and refused to pay attention to the cries of electricity consumers by not addressing the issue even as DISCOs claim that prepaid meters are not the consumers’ property.
The Reps further mandated its Committee on Power to ensure compliance of its directive and report back in four weeks.
