OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives has been told of the sad story of how brothers to the late husband shot the bereaved widow and left two of her relatives dead in an attack that left the Obosi community in Anambra State in shock.
Moved by the depressing narration, the House tasked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Usman Alkali Baba, to immediately commence probe into the attack and bring the perpetrators to book.
The House also requested the police boss to place the widow, Chidinma Benita Okwuibe, under police protection to forestall further possible attempt at her life.
These were part of the resolutions by the House at plenary on Wednesday after it listened to a motion moved by Nnolim Nnaji (PDP, Enugu) who narrated how relatives of the widow, Monica Okwuibe and Nkiruka Anyaegbunam Onyedika were shot dead at the funeral of the deceased husband, Mr. Onyedika Jeremiah Okwuibe on January 13, 2022 in Anambra State.
According to the motion, Chidinma, who is from Enugu State, lost her husband, 33, last year after battling an ailment said to be “elephantiasis.”
Nnaji said the victims are from Edumegu, Okorouba-Ozalla autonomous community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. He also noted that the acts were committed at Obosi in Anambra State on the day that Chidinma was conducting the burial ceremony of her late husband who died on 6 December 2021.
The lawmaker recalled that that at about 6:00 pm on the said date, three masked gunmen forcefully entered the compound of the bereaved Anyaegbunam family in Obosi and shot sporadically, scaring away mourners with the intent of locating the deceased wife who ran for safety.
“Alarmed that the assailants searched for Mrs. Chidinma and threatened to kill her if she failed to confess what happened to their late brother to which she pleaded for her life to be spared or be made to swear an oath, but was shot severally leaving her in critical condition of which she is currently in intensive care unit under life support at the hospital.
He expressed alarm that “Mrs. Monica Okwuibe (mother of Chidinma) was shot to death instantly while Mrs. Nkiruka Anyaegbunam (Chidinma’s sister-in-law, who accommodated her during her ordeal with her late husband’s family members), was equally shot to death.
“The suspects who perpetrated the heinous crime and unlawful act against humanity, are brothers in-law to Mrs. Chidinma with unidentified accomplices, who had nurtured their plans since the death of Mr. Onyedika forcefully took away his house and other properties from the young widow under false allegations.
“Two of the suspects are presently in police custody at the State CID Awka, Anambra State, but one key suspect is still at large with no cogent information to the public,” Nnaji stated.
He expressed worry that the deteriorating health condition of Chidinma who is recuperating from the varying degrees of injuries sustained from the multiple bullet wounds in her stomach has left concerned Nigerians apprehensive of her survival and thus requires urgent attention in a more equipped medical facility.
Adopting the motion, the House urged the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster and Social Development, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the National Human Rights Commission to assist Chidinma in physical, mental (psychological) and economic recovery, including compensation plan.
It mandated the Committees on Police Affairs, Women Affairs and Human Rights to appropriately monitor the case and report back within four (4) weeks for further legislative action while the committee on Legislative Compliance is to ensure implementation.
