OrderPaperToday – The boycott of the inauguration session of standing committees by Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila together with some of his loyalists may have put him in a confidence crisis as many members of the House of Representatives are displeased with his action and may move against him.

Yesterday, whilst the inauguration was ongoing in the chambers of the House, some supporters of Gbajabiamila were at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) addressing the press where they called the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, a fifth columnist in the ruling party and asked him to immediately dissolve the constituted committees.

They accused the speaker of being “a fifth columnist, an agent provocateur committed to destabilizing the House on behalf of the powerful forces that have ruined Nigeria and brought us to the current sorry pass.” (Click to read full text of the press statement)

But indications that the majority leader’s camp had split and that some principal officers hitherto backing him have switched support to the Speaker emerged when Chief Whip, Alhassan Dogowa, hitherto a key Gbajabiamila ally, inferred that the body of principal officers of the House was duly consulted before the announcement of committee leadership by Dogara.

In seconding the motion that the House adjourn the inauguration session, Dogowa said: “I rise to second on behalf of the nine duly consulted principal officers that the House adjourned till tomorrow.” The motion to adjourn was moved by House deputy leader, Mr. Buba Jibrin.

Feelers received from the House indicate that Gbajabiamila’s action may put him on collision course with the majority of members who view his boycott of the inauguration ceremony and his strident attack on the speaker as unbecoming of the person and office of the House leader.

“Femi’s action is unprecedented and a sour abdication of his responsibilities as leader and this is not something we will want to tolerate from him,” said a member who declined to offer more information on what action members may take against the leader.

At the press conference, Mr. Musa Sarki-Adar representing Gononyo/Gada Constituency, Sokoto state, said the Gbajabiamila camp boycotted the inauguration because the composition of the committee was not in adherence to the directive of the APC leadership and a marginalization of the ruling party.

Meanwhile, Speaker Dogara has assured that every committee will receive equal opportunity to contribute to the success of the House in delivering its functions, denying the notion that some were ‘juicy’ committees and others less important.

Senate President Bukola Saraki who attended the session in his remark, described the inauguration as “a signpost of readiness to give direction to the 8th House.”

Speaking on behalf of all members, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin pledged support to the leadership of the House and promised that the committees will discharge their responsibilities to the best of their abilities.
