Onuigbo said the shift from traditional energy sources to renewables is essential for sustainable development.

A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Samuel Onuigbo, has urged the federal government to commit to financing energy transition in Nigeria, as this will ensure sustainable progress in the present climate context.

This is as he also called on investors to seize the opportunity presented by Nigeria’s vast potential for renewable energy.

Onuigbo said this while delivering a keynote address at the Africa Climate Forum Conference held on Friday, at the Armed Forces Officers’ Complex in Asokoro, Abuja.

At the event titled; “Powering the Future: Financing Energy Transition for Sustainable Progress”, the ex-lawmaker said that the shift from traditional energy sources to renewable energy is key to ensuring sustainable development in Nigeria.

“There’s a need to transition from traditional energy sources to renewables such as wind, solar, and hydropower. This shift is essential for economic growth, productivity, and achieving sustainable development goals.

“Section 26 of the Climate Change Act is aligned with the theme of the conference “Powering the Future” It is a forward-thinking piece of legislation, emphasising the integration of climate change into Nigeria’s educational curriculum.”

Oniugbo, who is also a member of the Governing Council of the Northeast Development Commission, noted that the “provisions of the Act are a commendable step toward raising awareness and preparing future generations to address pressing environmental challenges effectively.”

Further, he urged investors to seize the opportunity presented by Nigeria’s vast potential for renewable energy, while noting the importance of learning from past experiences, particularly in the early 2000s when Nigeria privatized its telecommunications sector.
