OrderPaperToday – The invasion of the Ekiti State House of Assembly last Friday by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) reverberated in the House of Representatives Tuesday.

The House accordingly summoned the Director-General of DSS, Lawal Daura to appear before it within 24 hours to explain the reasons behind the action of the secret police.

This followed the unanimous adoption of a motion under matters of urgent public importance by House Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor (PDP-Delta).

Presenting the motion, Ogor decried the action saying that such the DSS action violates the principle of separation of powers in a democracy.

He said: “It is a clear violation of the provisions of the constitution; it is unacceptable as it demonstrates interference of an arm of government.

“If somebody violates the law and nothing is done, it gives him the privilege to move forward.

“Therefore, it is important that we summon the Director-General of the DSS to explain where the agency derived its powers to invade and destabilize the activities of the House.

“It is important to respect the rule of law and the sanctity of this institution must remain sacrosanct.”

Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, in his ruling referred the matter to Committee on Public Safety and Intelligence for further legislative action.
