MIDTERM: Effiong joins the no-show bills chart list

OrderPaperToday – Emmanuel Ukpong Udo Effiong is a newbie in parliament and  is one of the ten Representatives of Akwa-Ibom State in the House of Representatives in the current 9th Assembly.

Mr. Effiong is representing Ikono/Ini federal constituency on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He is the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Interior and a member of the Ad-hoc Committee to review employment into the federal Civil Service and other government agencies.

According to records, he is among the no-show group in the House at Midterm (June 2019- June 2021).

Despite being a Safety and Health Consultant who is reviewing unemployment in the country, he sponsored no bill to address or mitigate the problem of unemployment or other work-related issues.

However, his performance on bills sponsorship, is without prejudice on his efforts in the two other essential legislative duties of representation and oversight. Perhaps a record of performance on those areas would make-up for him.

Also, allowing for the possibility that he may still be learning the system as a newcomer to parliament, he may do better and have bills sponsored in his name before the end of the 9th assembly.

He reportedly appointed 50 personal assistants, compared to the allowed number of 5 aides for a lawmaker, implying that he is paying them out of his own pocket, which is a record in Akwa-Ibom state.
