OrderPaperToday – A budget defence session in the House of Representatives Thursday ended on a dramatic note as lawmakers walked out on the Director General (DG) of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI).

The House Committee on Basic Education and Services refused to take the 2016 budget presentation of the NTI because the institute was erroneously classified under Basic Education instead of ‘Tertiary Institution’ by the Ministry of Education.

Chairman of the committee, Mr. Zakare Mohammed asked the DG of the Institute, Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, to return and sort out the error before returning to parliament for budget defence.

He accordingly adjourned the session indefinitely as he and his committee members filed out of the room leaving a dumbfounded Sharehu, who had led a team to defend the budget confounded.

The committee said that it was only appropriate for the Institute to propose an amendment to the Act establishing it and not to ridicule what was lawfully done by calling it erroneous.
