OrderPaperToday – Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has lamented the rising spate of extra judicial killings, kidnapping and high profile murders in recent times in Nigeria.
Dogara spoke Thursday at the opening of public hearing by the committee on police affairs at the national assembly in Abuja.
The Speaker said the situation constitutes serious national challenge which had resulted in unquantifiable loss of lives and properties in the country.
Dogara assured that the House will provide adequate legislative backing to measures aimed at addressing the national security challenges including terrorism and insurgency in the North-East of the country.
“The legal framework to support the security services in tackling crime, terrorism and other national security concerns would be given full support,” he said.
Mr.. Halliru Jika. Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs, in his remarks said the committee will not fail the Nigerian people in supporting the police to ensure proper discharge of their duties.
He said: “As a Parliament, we are committed to upholding the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended and other extant laws.
“According to section 14 (2b) of the constitution, ‘the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.
“We are irrevocably committed to this course and we shall provide the needed legislative platform to achieve this objectives of government.”
